As you’ve almost certainly figured-out, I’m building myself a little reference library here, before getting stapled full-time onto the community. To stick to the pub analogy, a bloke can’t expect the regulars to buy him drinks if he doesn’t even know their bloody names. (There’s no messageboard equivalent of being gouged in the mantit by a shatterproof alcopop-bottle, but still – I hate drinking alone.)

So let’s make things a bit more interesting.

TELL ME OF OTHERS.

A lot of you folks have been part of this thriving, healthy, dynamic community for a long time – lovely lovely pissheads, the lot of you. Others have been on the outskirts paying close attention, like beer-rapists in waiting. They’re lovely too, and I hope we can entice them to pipe-up. Either way, in all that time, I’d hope others have made a strong impression on you at least once or twice. Right? Right.

So tell me about your fellow blethernauts. Who’s got the biggest gob? Who’s always ready with the Sticky Wee of Wisdom? Who’s reliably reasonable? Who’s made you laugh so hard you had to do the Hasty Bathroom Waddle? Who’s moved you, and how?

WHAT I WANT: One-line character sketches, anecdotes, boozy recollections. [Imagine that the arrival of my glorious digital gonad has accidentally annihilated every other user; your job is to briefly obituarise your favourite corpses before the electroherpes nixes you too.]

WHAT I DON’T WANT: Insults, grudge-bearing, scab-pickery. This is your chance to say excellent things about excellent peers; not an open-entry shitfling for pissy little children. Stirrers will be sent home without their car-keys.

WHAT I ALSO DON’T WANT: People sulking or getting arsey because they haven’t been mentioned. Doesn’t matter, folks: this isn’t about spiritual validation or backslappery. Lemon Laser Betty, taphead, and greasemonkey all stand out to me as consistently delivering the goods to the Around the Net thread (which I hope sticks around, because I like having a fresh supply of handpicked weirdness).

Iceland Bob, Joe.distort, nigredo, and †3X†UR3 are notable for their contributions to any threads of a musical bent. I know there are regulars from the Book Club thread, but I'm having trouble remembering any names at the moment.

And I always enjoy the artistic efforts of Paul Sizer, mojokingbee, dorkmuffin, Rachæl Tyrell, COOP, oldhat, and valente.

There are a lot of people who don't necessarily seem to have a main hangout, but are always around making things better and stranger, like Oda, 256, mybrainhurts, chris g, lampcommander, etc. The list goes on and on. †3X†UR3 is a really nice guy who was the first one to give me a photography feature on his web site, Weaponizer, when I was first starting out. This helped raise my confidence and move towards Career Mode with what I do. On top of that, he's an incredible musician and really gives a shit about bringing notice to artists, writers and musicians to the public eye.

Dorkmuffin and Oda both have the direct line to the part of my brain that makes me smile. Dork is an incredibly talented artist whose work I want on my walls and in-person meetings have shown we make a hell of a good team. Oda I think would be the best drinking buddy in the world. I definitely want to put on a snazzy dress and paint the town with her.

Icelandbob is a music-finding god of some sort. Seeing him develop has been such a treat. Well, it's all in here on a post he did about his time on Whitechapel.

Rachæl Tyrell will most likely shy away at being called it, but she's been a heavy inspiration for me. Her actions inspired me to start selling prints way back when and I learned how to better channel my emotions in to my work better thanks to her. She taught me that the line between artist and art can be pretty blurred and for that I owe her a huge debt.

taphead is an incredibly talented musican who just happens to be one incredibly hot man from Finland. His music, both as Taphead and the band Älymystö has been the soundtracks to many nights. On top of this he has a never ending supply of encouragement.

Ok, specifics (this is maybe why I get so few drinks courtesy other people, I remember personalities, I don't tend to remember to pay attention to names). Icelandbob is simply a doll, brilliant with the music as everyone has said, but just also personable and fun. Oldhat: creative, cute and snarky in perfect measure. Seantaclaus: good bloke who tweets the most brilliant food he makes at one am; also has been willing to IM with me when I'm in an emotional tangle. Rachael Noel: Ridiculously talented and eagerly jumps into new projects because no one told her she couldn't. Glukkake: All of these, plus some. Got to meet her in NYC, been in awe of her willingness to jump at new opportunities, to push herself, and oh by the way, to be totally welcoming of strangers. DavidLejeune (sp?) was cool to meet at the Worst Kuchie weiner place in East LA and MikiM was likewise a hell of a treat. I look forward to Trini_Naenae's posts on SNOMs. Dunno if she knows that, but she looks out for other people and that's sweet and I think sometimes have the same issues with trying to deal with hurdles and brain chemistry, though we lead very, very different lives.

Oldhat being talked into buying a book about Jack Parsons, physicist and occultist. This is the best thing about Robin - she is interested in all sorts of incredible weirdness, and you wave a book about a possibly Satan worshiping rocket engineer at her, she will snap it right up. She also takes pictures of MURDER!

FC sharing stories about designing assets for Second Life. Did you know she does that? She is also an intrepid Urban Explorer. Also one of the best band photographers I've ever seen.

Mister Hex threatening to stab anyone's gums with a screwdriver should they express sympathy with Stan lee in the meta Ur-conflict of Marvel Comics. Mister Hex possesses a fine bicycle, and is an authority on bookstores and bars in the greater Toronto area. He apparently loves Coronation Street. And Jack Kirby. But neither so much as his bicycle.

Peter Kelley describing his adventures in digitizing reels and reels of deteriorating footage from the old TV show Road to Avonlea. He came by what was apparently the last set of functioning equipment that could accomplish this task, and had it languishing in his garage or basement or something. When it came time to prepare the beloved Canadian little-house-on-the prairie style family classic for DVD release, there was only one man in all Canada with the technology for the job. At least, that is how the story has been elaborated in my head.

Together, the five of us drank many beers, then shopped for comics drunk at midnight, because it was Canada and you're allowed to do that up there. To see all the fine individuals described above in action you can consult the epic two page thread chronicle right here.

And though sadly I was not able to meet her on that visit, I can speak highly of the taste and intelligence of Allana, also Canadian, with whom, as a result of a conversation begun here in a book Club thread, I shared a live blogging of a mutual reading of The Difference Engine. She is a brilliant conversationalist, able to weave thoughts skillfully through posts, small essays, chat logs and photo & art choices, and is the sort of person who can deliberately approach a work of art from a point of view diametrically opposed to the one she would natrually take, just to see if there was anything new to be discovered thereby.

The Internet's Own David LeJeune is one of my local Angelino Whitechaplain compatriots, though he is departing for Phoenix soon for employment reasons, so we can't hold that against him. He is a fine fellow whom I have met in person at the Wurstkuche and points downtown, as razrangel above has mentioned.

razrangel herself is also an interesting person - she is currently pursuing a voiceover career and Japanese as a second language, both at the same time!

Also, MikiM is an engaging and adventurous person, who recently appeared in Los Angeles from up in the mountains somewhere. Some say she has not aged in a thousand years, and is known among bears in their dream-language as the Clawbreaker. She has come down to the big city to solve crimes and be puzzled by our modern ways. Some of what I just said is true, but I'll leave it to her to disavow what she'd rather not have you believe. She told us a disturbing story about a piece of ornamental metal being consumed by her flesh in an unexpected way. That is absolutely true. She recovered.

One of my favorite Whitechaplains who I haven't met in person is Argos. She is a San Diegan Burner who hoops, rocks a surprising variety of increasingly awesome hair styles, and gives good tweet. I predict she will be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. She's like a Mad Max villain in a larval stage. When civilization collapses, Argos will rule Bartertown.

That's all only who I can think of at the moment. So many wonderful people here. I'll add my regards as well for Orwellseyes and Looneynerd, who both enriched us with much real knowledge in conversations that, elsewhere on the web, are usually dominated by stubborn ignorance. These two have the science.

OLDHAT - A photographer of immense talent (seriously, she's a genius) and great sense of humor, Robin can identify a beer by its smell from five miles away.

GINJA - A science-fiction connoisseur and writer, Ginja's hair is lengthy enough to lasso a fucking buffalo and still have enough left to make a decently-sized wig.

MADSWINTHER - He's awesome. We've been practicing insults on each other since we've met. But he's been getting soft in his old age. HEAR THAT, POOPYHEAD? WHAT, CAT GOT YOUR TONGUE AFTER ARSEFUCKING YOU?

ICELANDBOB - was too mad for Scotland so they sent him to Iceland and now fifteen volcanos have exploded. He's a music journalist. I'm happily listening to this right now.

RACHAEL TYRELL - Her photography shapes reality to its will. She can make anything look beautiful. Here's a picture she took of unspeakable slime that I hope she hasn't poisoned herself with, and it's somehow gorgeous. The fourth pic in this set is one of my all time favorite photographs. She is a wonderful artist and person. Much love, Rae.

ANOPHELES - Excellent artist with a great knowledge of biology, particularly bugs. His spare time is one hour per month. He's working on a project that is absolutely insane in its complexity and I badly want to see it finished, if he manages to do so before his sanity shatters.

TEXTURE - Musician, poet, writer and editor of WEAPONIZER, for which I've contributed a few stories. He's an incredibly nice guy. If you torn off his leg and beat him with it he'd still ask you to stop, please, if it's not too much of a bother.

MISTER HEX - is cool. The Dude is based on this guy. He gets royalties and everything.

ODAELISABETH - Cuuuuuuuute cutecutecutecutecutecute cuuuuuuuuuuuute. Clever and funny and also cute.

PAUL SIZER - Amazingly talented designer, author of an excellent graphic novel and a great guy.

DORKMUFFIN - Awesome artist with the curly hair to rule all curly hairs.

ROOTH: One of the best draftsmen I've ever seen. The precision of his lines is unbelievable. And like Texture, he suffers from Extremely Nice Guy syndrome.

atavistian - Seems to mostly lurk on the irc side of things. The emergency dispatcher who's at least a painter and a writer, and full of interesting chatter about stuff like modern shamanism and fringe psychotherapy.

Jess - ...whom I've had the honour to meet in real life when she visited Finland. A very smart and hot person with whom I've had really interesting conversations about botany, old manuscripts and, well, turtles. Can't go wrong with turtles.

odaelisabeth - Our lady from Norway, who is cute as buttons and wrangles black metal bands for living (which is a perfectly respectable job in Norway - more like a public service up there).

(I've been meaning to try and muster up the nerve to do a collaboration with him, but -- as they say on the internet -- bitches don't know about my crippling lack of self-confidence.)

BRYCEMIDAS - Hasn't been around here in a while, but damn if he doesn't do this lofi folk thing like a champ. Also knows dive bars and food from pub nosh to haute cuisine.

SONNY - Mild Maynyrd fills that void you didn't even know existed in your music library witha non-trivial combo of hiphop, ambient, industrial and post-rock. Aces, I tell you.

TEXTURE - A one-man powerhouse. Makes sounds, fires rhymes, runs a record label, writes, and god knows what else. He's a reason to visit Edinburgh.

Mojokingbee — In my head, this is always read as "Mo Joking Bee" rather than Mojo King Bee. His dynamic, frenetic, and always a little out of control sketching is a pleasure to look at. TONS of drive and talent in this guy.

Oldhat — This woman is a force to be fucking reckoned with. She's brilliantly talented but always humble (perhaps sometimes a little too humble...) and unwittingly commands the respect and admiration of pretty much everyone who has ever set foot in this forum. Rightfully so. She makes me wish I weren't allergic to beer even more than I already do.

Oda — Valkyrie. Oda is a fucking Valkyrie, but she's our Valkyrie (or maybe Norwegian nymph? Who lives in fjords?). This means when people break her heart, we (ahem, Paul Sizer) take it upon ourselves to mercilessly mock them through art. Or words. Basically, Oda is a bouncing symbol of joy.

Paul Sizer — Big Poppa Artsmith, boldly leading the flock (many of whom are rabid fans of his bright colors and sassy rendering skills) in a utili-kilt. Armed with a giant pencil. Soundtrack by Dolby.

Argos — I have to admit, I, like many others here, am just a little bit in love with Argos. She looks like a cyberpunk/biopunk/dystopian-future-punk fertility goddess and gives off a distinct air of sweetness and wisdom at once. Also, she seems rather determined.

Andre — Angsty Andre SPIT theme. Never before have so many looked angsty and topless for one man out of sheer love.

JoanneLeah — Her photographs simply floor me. I absolutely count her among the photographers I look at for inspiration.

OddBill — This man draws naked ladies. He draws them really well.

Artists of varying technique, skill and style, with one real crucial common aspect : Passion. These people have constantly shamed me with quality, quantity and invention of their work, and are massive, massive reason to come here alone.

T3xtur3, and Icelandbob, Scots lads, Great wit and incredibly driven. I live in hope of one day meeting Bob and doing something resulting in arrest with his company. I'm not sure what fuel Bram runs on, but if he doesn't reach the stars, I'm sure the fireball he goes up in will light most of the Western Hemisphere.

Spiraltwist and M1k3y without whom Grinding.be might die. I don't see much of them here anymore, but their tireless work on Grinding is greatly appreciated. I feel I have to mention WillowB100 the incredulously stylish Jon Wake, These people have taken the torch of speculative human futurity and run with it and it's been a big part of my interests here.

Libby Bulloff , along with the lovely Lex Machina, Bankara and Katie West, Rachael Noel Fox, are all beautifully skilled photographers, Lex is a steampunk Goth fashionista that roams the US in a Pseudo-winnebago, with her indescribably handsome nomadic partner, for fucksake, If that's not a person worth keeping an eye on, I don't know what is.

There's so many more people here that are worth meriting. Jeff Owens, who's updated his stonertacular webcomic every day for what seems an almost impossible length of time and is an awesomely nice guy. Andre Navarro, who's staggering moaniness is matched only by his almost indefagitable drive to work and his absolutely infalible dry humour, Oldhat, and her relentless pursuit of understanding booze, photography, writing and about 8 other things. The utterly quirky Rootfireember, Cat Vincent, west country battlemagus and and absolute necessity on Twitter, with a feed that never stops giving. Ginja and his unbound knowledge of books, writing and writers.

Taphead and Oda, whom I've had the pleasure of meeting. Taphead is a man of incredible skill, and almost ridiculous humble nature given how talented he is, and Oda, who is even more charming and lovely than her presence here describes. Even the misty shower photo.

oh my, where to begin. First off, I agree that some whitechapelers I feel I know better than friend-friends. Everyone's amazing. I'm gonna forget some people here, so forgive me if I don't mention ...

Oldhat, Dorkmuffin, Oda, and Rachael Fox were the four females who caught my eye when I first joined.

Oldhat is super friendly gets along with everyone and I imagine if there was ever anyone she didn't like, they must be a horrible person with a foul soul. She's constantly working toward bettering herself and improving her skill sets, has killer taste in beer, and knows how to rock a camera.

Dorkmuffin is a really cool gal with one of the best smiles I've ever seen, and has amazing hair. She knows how to wield a paint brush, so don't fuck with her.

Oda is just the right balance of super adorable and METAL \m/

Rachael Fox is super beautiful, takes amazing photos, and links to really cool artwork on her tumblr, which is definitely worth following.

I really want to have an irl ladies night with these girls on day. We would KILL.

Oddbill has amazing piercing green eyes and is popular with the ladies here. Like many in WC, he has great taste in beer, and is also a really good artist. He makes great conversation whether on WC or over twitter. We still need to meet.

Thewaltonsare takes the best self-portraits I've seen. Also she has really cool Spider Jerusalem tattoos.

Comicbookbunny makes really cool hats and has submitted some of the best poses to the Draw Each Other threads.

Mojokingbee Makes really cool artwork out of poses from the Draw Each Other thread. He has an incredibly unique style.

Icelandbob is the very definition of punk, and he's in a commercial!

Andre Navarro is Brazilian and has a gorgeous, deep voice that sounds like what a smooth, warm spirit feels like when you drink it.

GekkoHopman and StSparky haven't been around for a while but they're both really awesome.

Gekko submits the best SPIT pictures, and if you follow him on Instagram, has some of the best stuff I've seen on there.

StSparky is the first person to call me "he" while knowing that I was a biofemale (it had only ever happened before when I was mistaken to be an actual male), and I love that no one in that thread drew attention to it or made any "hey Argos is a girl!" comment.

Rachael Fox: I believe that Rachael is the best kind of stubborn. I don't think she would be the kind of stubborn that would be hard to be around, but more the type of stubborn who knows what she wants and refuses to stop until it HAPPENS! She's also been able to make a lot of her more difficult moments into stunning photographs. Flooring, jawdropping, beautiful moments crystalized.

VKlaus to start with. He told me once on twitter that I ought to come hang out here, and that it was filled with neat people. I followed his advice, and am so happy I did. Doesn't post much, (I think he's usually in the irc, but I never am) but awesome nonetheless.

Oldhat. Of course. Everyone's said it, but she's a great photographer, and she knows her beer. I mailed her fudge once. We also did an art trade once. Robin's the only person here I've had any non-internet contact with (I've never met any of you people in meatspace), and it's been lovely. I like sending things in the mail, and it's even better receiving art and things from the mysterious land of Canada.

Rachæl Tyrell is one of my favorite photographers, not just on Whitechapel. She is very talented all around.

Paul Sizer Absolutely fantastic artist and designer. I'd love to meet him and shake his hand one day. Perhaps steal some of his power over typography while doing so, if I can figure out how to steal powers through handshakes.

frequentcontributor Welcomed me right away when I came to Whitechapel by complimenting an undeserving drawing on a Remake/Remodel thread. (Sizer did too, but I read Frequent's comment first, and so my week had already been made before I read what Paul had to say, basically.) He also followed me to my blog to comment shortly after. I realized then that there is not any place in real life I've feel so happy and welcome in as Whitechapel.

Except I see two glaring omissions. Two people that I dont think Ive seen named that should be are Dako (Who urged me to watch The Wire a couple years ago and I owe him for it and is generally fun and awesome) and Allen Wiggs who has a super passion to make things and give others a place to put things they make in his magazine project MAKE SOMETHING and he also made the web show ZOMBIE CONVERSATIONAL.

If I was gonna go back and highlight anyone, it'd be TEXTURE and BRYCE MIDAS who have both made music that has infected my brain and always finds its way onto my mp3 player. Bryce's stuff is like Bruce Springsteen's NEBRASKA but four times better and Texture's PARASOMNIA ep is riiidiculouuussllyy awesome.]]>
