Looks like Mr E isn't happy with his brush with Google+, who is going to tell him he is "doing Google+ wrong"? ;) Bagsy not me.
Here's the thing about G+, for me. Understand that I am not upset in the slightest. The system just doesn't work so well for me. Because:
1) even with all notifications switched off, that little red light in Gmail is baked in and I can't turn it off. Which means that, even with all notifications switched off, that red light goes off for me every sixty seconds, with the number 1 in it, and then it starts incrementing. For someone who does half his work in Gmail, that is really a bit irritating.
2) Relevancy captures work better on Twitter. In fact, discovery works better, too, as you can see who your twitter friends talk to (in a couple of ways).
3) Also, have you noticed that when your friends arrive on Twitter, they tweet at you? But when they arrive on G+ they assume the notification that they put you in a circle will work? But you get at least ten notifications every minute on your Gmail button, and the notifications sort of vanish into a memory hole if you don't have email notifications on, so if you are say asleep or eating or taking a piss or hey maybe even not online for a day... SO, when you come back, your friend who added you to a circle is one of a thousand little faces. If you're me. And the relevancy/find capture doesn't work so well, as noted.
4) Which also means you miss people whom you might just be interested in following. I can pull up the last few days' of "people who have followed me on Twitter" pretty easily. That's how I found that, to give just two recent examples, Al Murray and Mark Romanek were following me.
There is no "wrong." There is simply "what works for me." G+ doesn't work for me so well. No big deal. I got a halfway amusing blogpost out of it. End of. -

I was having a discussion about this today, at this point, aside from the circles there is not much of a difference between G+ and FB (that I can see) which makes it more of a situation of a diner opening across the street from your normal diner. If they offer waffles is it really worth switching? Unlike Warren, I do not have nearly as many people that are interested in me so I don't have the notification problem yet, but if I get two notifs and click on 1 the other goes away, which is frustrating.
I'll be around but will probably stick with FB and Twitter for now. -

RE: Writing Group. I'm the guy starting one. Or possibly more than one, since it seems to be popular. To simplify things, here I am again. If you're interested, give me a shout and we can figure things out. I like the idea that we WC writers can find a way to support one another like the artists/photographers do, while doing so in an eel free manner. So even if I'm not actively involved in any and all workshops, I don't mind helping with the co-ordination. -
I'm down for that. I need more excuses to write, and more motivation to...

My experience reading Dante isn't that extensive, but didn't he just explore the circles in the Inferno? Something else in Limbo actually put those wayward souls into the circles.
I am now tempted to name this particular circle "Whitechapel / Sinners" now, though. -

There is no "wrong." There is simply "what works for me." G+ doesn't work for me so well.
Oh I know, it was a little tongue in cheek, as there are people complaining about Google+ being awfully quiet and asking if they are doing it wrong, the answer being yes they are and I drop this link in. DJ Coffman has gone further and suggests people should get stuck into Google+'s recommendations and add everyone, personally it would make the Stream unusable but perhaps that is part of the point if you are more interested in reaching out to people, plus it forces you to rely on your circles to filter content. I suspect the problem is this isn't a Facebook or Twitter replacement and so people have to devise strategies to suit their specific needs, get it right and it can be very powerful and flexible.
Your situation is different to most people's so their strategies won't be directly applicable but I reckon there are enough Plusers (has someone worked out a useful collective noun?) on here to hack out a solution. So let's start by addressing the points:
1. Yes it is annoying, switching between Gmail and researching on Google means you are plagued by the little red box and it is a pain to get tempted to click on it and lose half a hour and your train of thought. Luckily iGoogle doesn't have it at the moment and I use that as my homepage to which I bring in Gmail, Google Reader, Google news feeds and the like, but that will change I'm sure. Now someone has produced a script to "improve" the Google+ bar that includes more red squares, which is heading in the wrong direction but shows this can be hacked by someone with the technical know-how (Google Unenhancer?), perhaps someone has done this already but I can't find it. It'd also be worth someone putting in a feedback request asking for a way to turn this off with the other notifications.
2. Yes this does need work but you can find other people that your friends are talking to either directly in the posts or by clicking the "limited" link to show who the post was shared with.
3. I suspect your best bet is to post a message asking for friends and acquaintances to make themselves known to you and they can post to the comments there. You should be able to scoop up enough people to populate your Friends and Acquaintances circles, then drag everyone who has followed you into your Following circle and ignore the Stream unless you are bored. Next you could create a *Reading circle, the asterisks is important as it makes it sort into the free slot in the uncollapsed list in the left column, where you can add people who might not count as Family, Friends or Acquaintances but supply a consistently decent quality of posts. You could also add in a Whitechapelers circle, there are between 95-100 (or more now) and I tend to find that most of the interesting and useful posts get shared by them at some point, so you could rely on them to filter the content for you (you can also shift people out of the circle if there is too much signal to noise).
4. I suspect that once you get your circles up and running (so you can ignore the Stream) then you'll spot these people and new ones you'd not know you wanted to follow before as people you are monitoring share their content. You could always post asking for people to recommend interesting people to add to your circles, doing a public one might be unmanageable but if you throw it open to Family, Friends and Acquaintances then you should be OK. However, as I say, you'll usually spot them once you start using the circles to cut down on the noise. You might also find the notifications useful as people adding you to circles get collected into a single notification, while mentions of you in posts, direct messages or replies to threads you have commented in get their own notification (although again if they refer to one post then they get compressed into one notification - so if multiple people comment in a post you make and +1 it, that is all crunched down into one).
Anyway, that is my first stab at a solution. I'm sure the others have better ideas or tweaks to the above suggestions. The key is: add everyone to a Following circle, start building up a small number of focused circles, and use these to filter incoming content (as well as outgoing communications), which should also allow you to start spotting the interesting people who might want to add to one of your circles. -

Google updated the G+ Android App (and presumably the just released iPhone App works the same way). A couple of handy features were added: Chief among them for most, I imagine, being the ability to restrict who can invite you to a Huddle to specific circles. The Circle filters for the stream are also quite nice. -
Good google, you guys post to G+ a lot! It's a bit overwhelming. Soon, Facebook will be empty and then I'll go back and revel in the alone-time.

There is a bit of an effort on to compile a list of folks from here over there. Check your stream (it should be strong, continuous and lightly coloured).

This is the data base, Seen a few others do this on G+, seems to work pretty good.
The link is for a shared google docs spread sheet, you can all just open it and add you name, and post the link to your own circles.

And my account has been suspended for the second time, I don't reckon I'll be quite so fortunate this time round.
The real pain is, despite what they've said about fixing their suspension system there was no warning or message, I kept getting errors that I couldn't post or add people to circles, until the penny dropped and I checked my profile page. There seems to have been no real change in the system from the first time this happened (other than Gmail and iGoogle still work). [edit: there is one change - all I get is an error when I click the link to review my case] -
