Done for Gnomon forum's monthly challenge, forest's edge.
Executed in PhotoChop, Using the default chalk brush with the texture turned off, and the default round brush with settings altered on the fly.

Original image is 5000 px across.

As always, amazing work from all.

I have a Photoshop question that I am hoping someone may know the answer to.

I frequently use the magic wand tool to make selections on my black and white ink art when colouring. For some reason when I click on a white area it will select all the white instead of the closed section. I can go to a colour layer and select the colour but I can't seem to make a simple closed selection on the B & W original. Any ideas?

It is Photoshop 7 I am using and this is a task I used to do all the time. I'm thinking something in the settings, that I cannot seem to find, was changed.

Photomagex: it may be the 'contiguous' option of the wand tool 'cos when that's checked, the wand selects only adjacent areas of the same colors. hence all the white areas being selected even though isolated. Same thing happened to me a while ago and that turned out to be it.

i've been working on an application form (it's for a place on a program for six weeks of working with design companies) that included a brief to do some self focused work it was a change of pace, darwing myself as me instaed of just using myself as reference for characters, here's two of what i came up with, first is two portraits seperating me and the artist persona from each other, i tend to wear odd hats/goggles while i draw it started while i was alone in a small room alone for six months working on an animation.

and then i wanted to try to do a typography self portrait, i'm a bit shy and drew a blank on what words to use so i enlisted the help of my friends and these are the words they think descibe me.

Also, I have a couple of IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO PEOPLE USING MANGA STUDIO!
so if anyone could answer me I'd be very grateful...

This is technically what I want to do: pencil the characters/backgrounds on paper, scan and "threshold" it so it's stark b/w, do some cleanup (stray lines, leftover pixels from badly erased lines, gaps etc), then add panel borders, lettering and (if applicable) speedlines/focus lines etc... also, some kind of either flat greys (one or two shades) or more texturey toned bits.

Since the thing will be later printed through a POD service (and also displayed as a webcomic), I'd like to avoid "hard" tones (moire patterns and such). Art would be printed at 300dpi but drawn at a higher res to get smoother lines after resizing (they'll retain some pencil roughness but won't have jagged square pixels poking through).

So the questions are:
Is all of the above possible? Are there any good tools for that? Will any of the parts become problematic? I'm mostly concerned about the greys rather than tones issue (last thing I want is to make a 200 page book only to find out I have to re-tone every page cause it prints like crap, heh).

Edit: I don't have the program yet but a friend is feeling generous... so I want to make sure Manga Studio will do what I need it to do before I throw the financial burden on his back.

When you select the magic wand tool, it's options appear in the toolbar.
please check the box next to 'contigious'

also, some advise, freely given:
scan in your linework, clean it up, then convert it into a multiply layer. (when a layer's mode is on multiply, the whiter a pixel is, the more transparent it will be, so this is ideal for lines etc).
after this, make a layer underneath, call it flats. here you will have base colours only.
in your linework layer, select an area (e.g. mickey mouse's button), and then expand the selection a pixel or two by going into select>modify>expand. this is to compensate for the unwanted white edges you sometimes get in this process, and for the linework over your colours.
once you have this selection, go to the flats layer underneath and fill it in. repeat for all of mickey.

RE: your questions, are you offering bnw printed or colour printed?
use the threshold thing only if you're scanning in at 600dpi or higher.

@harris-ejaz: Am I offering what? Umm, the book I'll be working on will be b/w (Ka-blam requires files in greyscale for that) ...unless you mean the color comic I posted above, that of course is printed in color.

I'm scanning either 300 or 600dpi. But then again the artwork is about a third larger than the final print size so I'm assuming that helps a little?

These are some stuff I've been working on, couple of illos that'll be illustrating the up-comming "Airship Pirates" RPG manual. From Abney Park. Those of you who can afford it, buy it and tell me about it. I recommend it especially because of the many artists that volunteered to make this book look awesome, and because Abney Park is a great band and has some cool stuff in their songs and stuff. Chek their website (www.abneypark.com). I think it's going to be a great work.

Fuck me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, the characters are all purple as an hyperkink and I don't know how to undo it. Fuck it.

Now the taxes have faulted and it's just a big mess. A no-claim sort of deal and the Tax Man Cometh. It has ate up a lot my free time lately. My daughter now talks, in the meanwhile, and points out my tats as "triangle" or "circle." So that's been a good distraction.

Not new in the least, I drew it back in 2008.

Back then, Casey and Octomom were in all the headlines. It was a satire piece.

Not really opening or meaning to bring up this discussion since the America media have flogged the dead-horse to death... and in 2010, the Octomom was doing fetish porn so the concept is way-lost. The general idea being that Octomom would have had to attack Casey to gain popular opinion back.

Hopefully one or two of you will get a laugh at it.

Yet another one on it's way:

I know these all are pretty much figure study drawings of women, and that seems to be all I do. At present it more or less is. I've gone back and forth over whether or not to start pushing outside of my simple inclinations. I don't think I will, yet. Just doing iterations on basically the same subject has been leading to technical skill advances that are really measurable. I can really see how much better things are emerging than the kinds of things I was doing years ago.

For example, here is a comparable pose from 2007:

And this is one of the better rendered studies I managed from that same year:

They both look rough and unspecific, compared to what I've been managing this year. Back then I was trying as hard as I could to do what I'm doing now, but those were as close as I could get. I'm so much closer now.

I don't really know how to explain why I only draw nude women these days. I guess that sounds absurd, because, well - nude women! Who doesn't want to look at them? But it really isn't that. There's just serenity and tension and weight and bone and balance in these bodies, and I don't understand it yet, so I just have to keep trying to model it in ink and chalk. Now I'm just trusting that, at some point, soon I think, something more meaningful will coalesce. A few of the drawings lately are going that way, they'll be more complete.

But I don't want to steer it. I want it to just happen, I want it to surprise me, so I'm going to just do what I feel like doing, and trust it.

Besides, @Dorkmuffin told me I should.

You have come along way, the work is looking incredible !!! hues, colors, textures. sculpting, knowing what to add/leave out, these peices are beautiful (and not just because it's nude women)

@oddbill - nah, not really. I'm a web designer by trade, so often get to flex the old illustration muscles with that. I've only been drawing again seriously for 2 or 3 years, had a bewildering decade + long layoff previous to that.

@neil: My mainstay is Cinema 4D, but I'm getting into Vue and Modo as well.

ZBrush is a beast, but worth the effort. Sculptris has been lauded in the past as an easier-to-get-into sculpting program. More significantly, the app was bought and its developer hired by the people who make ZBrush, and it seems it's being positioned as a gateway drug to ZBrush. More importantly it's still free.

I was told that I need to try and loosen up with my art so here are a couple attempts. I usually always draw in pencil first then ink with pen but now going at it with a brush right from the start kind of forces you to relinquish some control.

I had trouble figuring out three artists among those who impacted me...
Without any doubt, the first one would be Yukito Kishiro. There was clearly a "before" and "after" the first time I picked up Gunnm.
Two other keypoints would be Simon Bisley's run on ABC warriors and Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein illustrations.

Picking up three artists that have been very meaningful to me in the past and current year would be Kentaro Miura, John Baizley and Neil Ford.

@Imaginary people: Thank you!I've been enjoying your work a lot too! And regarding Berserk: I started by borrowing them at mid-run, read them from the beginning on the net and am slowly buying them back. I developed in the process an almost spiritual relationship with the books (for the whole of it I guess; the art, the story, the characters, the world....) - I think those book have brought me as close as I ever experienced to some kind of epiphany :)

I can't draw, but really... wow! everybody. I can answer the Robocop question. According to imdb, Miller did both 2 and 3. I recall seeing 2 in the theaters, psyched that I was going to see a movie Frank Miller wrote. It was going to be AWESOME! Um... at least it helped me avoid 3, which you all seem to think is worse.

hey! thanks a lot @imaginary!!! a friend has left me a tablet & i have colored all in digital for the first time... i´ve used "colores planos", don´t know how do you say it in english, google traductor says "spot color" but im not sure. Shadows & lights came from the inking & CG textures...

An online discussion about how Wonder Woman is perceived, written and marketed juxtaposed Xena: Warrior Princess and the Disney Princess line, and I found no-one had done this joke on GIS, and it seemed much funnier before I spent three hours colouring it.

These become what everyone wants from me as wedding season rolls around and people are looking for good gifts to give. I assume I'll do a few more in the next month or so. They seem to be taking me longer (I used to be able to bang them out in four hours... Did two in a day, once.), and I really don't like doing them. Also, somehow, because of how long they're taking, I've only made $4 per hour for the last two of these that I did... Not great. I wanted to paint another dog in a golf cart in the background, but only had two days to get this done, and ran out of time...

@frequentcontributor -this is why the illustrator/artists of out grandfathers' days had studios (as in people they hired to assist them) - so they could train hungry young kids to crank out exactly this sort of commission for them in their recognized style, while they focused on the parts of their work that interested them. Then everyone was happy and the spice flowed. Sadly, the industry doesn't really support that model anymore.

The classical master-apprenticeship still exists, only for a shorter amount of time and trust is a bit harder to come by.

I'm trying to obtain an apprenticeship in the netherlands, it's slow going since everyone has timeframe issues amongst others. But I'll keep at it.

I drew up a mock movie poster for a friend of mine. We were talking the other day about how great it would be to work together on making a zany B horror/sci fi film, we ended up settling on the name "Planet of the Poodles". That inspired me to make this. My other tagline ideas were "It's a dog eat HUMAN world!" and "Man's WORST friend".

I been workin' on my comic pretty regularly.

Those are pages 10 and 11, where I started doing the parallel-narrative thing I pretty much did the comic to play with. I'm actually up to page 18 online with 19/20 in progress; I've been doing this thing where I stick the gif of the previous page to the left of the artboard so there's a lot of chances for flow between pages when viewed all in a line. It's kind of infinite canvas but kind of not, since I'm still definitely composing each page to work as a single, regularly-sized image. I just built archive templates to present each chapter that way.

Also I've started doing a silly little animation with the main character from my comic versus the Dubstep Mime, I dunno, it made me laugh for a couple nights. But it's kind of been put aside for a few weeks because I need to spend time working on choreographing a reverse striptease to 'Still Alive' that I'll be performing next month. Busy busy busy.

I was working on a JH Williams style frame last time I posted here. It's been done for a while, but I didn't know what to do with it.

While I was looking around on this thread I saw a conversation on sculptris and decided to check that out. It didn't quite do what I wanted it to do, but I liked sculpting.
Installed zbrush on my computer about a week and a half ago and got an idea about what to do with the frame I made.

I'm not done yet with the sculpting, but I wanted to show off some quick comps. You won't see the detail on the finished thing and the colors will be different. Hope you like it.

Just finished this piece for an ASGARD Meets FOURTH WORLD art gallery created by Mr. Travis Ellisor.
Forager vs Ulik the Rock Troll. I don't know much about Forager, but I've always been a big fan of Ulik from the olds days of reading The Mighty Thor.
It was a real pleasure to work on. Ink and wash, and a touch of gouache.

Just dropping by to say that I've looked through the thread and everyone's goddamn awesome and sorry I didn't post anything myself but all I had done was a bunch of random doodles and sketches that are not worthy of this thread (maybe next month?).
