The bad news is that this is a terrible trailer.

The good news is that it is in no way indicative of the actual film's quality. The footage it displays could very well work in context.

The problem with the trailer is that it behaves as though this is a big-budget action-horror film, without the visuals to back it up. After the "But Not Alone" intertitle, action music kicks in and we see disjointed footage of actors awkwardly shooting their pistols and reacting with fear to something off-screen, not to mention what seems to be Tank Jones getting raped by a blanket. And then there's the unintentional hilarity of "Without Hope" being followed by two actors looking hopeless, with one of them even lowering her head.

From what I gather of the film's premise, a trailer with no sound other than quiet music, concentrating on atmosphere instead of action, perhaps without the annoying fade-in/fade-outs and certainly without the intertitles, could be far better-suited to promote the film.

He puts a great deal of thought into what's there, what's not there, and how that information sets the stage for when you start reading the actual comic.

So it is with this trailer. I think you've reacted to exactly the key story points that Garth wants you to react to -- you focused on the awkwardness (and go back and look at who in particular is most awkward, and think about why you might have been shown that), the unknown WTFedness of the creatures (and again, think about what the trailer tells you about the creatures and what it doesn't), and the hopelessness of the situation.

And... I have a feeling from some private feedback I've gotten that some people were expecting Battle Los Angeles By Garth Ennis, and obviously, Avatar is just figuring out how to promote, make, and finance these things, starting on a small scale and growing it (and this is the first step in a long journey for us, and we know how to take big steps ;) But Garth is as meticulous and precise as anyone I've ever worked with, and if you focus on what's there and not there, he's pointing you in a very specific direction with this, with just a tiny glimpse of what's going to be an expansive story.

If you've ever gotten one of those 16 page preview comics of one of our Garth Ennis titles, what you've seen in those is precisely what Garth wants you to see at that moment in time. He puts a great deal of thought into what's there, what's not there, and how that information sets the stage for when you start reading the actual comic.

I am a huge Garth Ennis fan. I agree with that wholeheartedly. The problem is not the info presented, it's the presentation. The intertitles, the disparity between music and footage, the cutting of the footage, etc. All that is shown could work if presented differently.

So it is with this trailer. I think you've reacted to exactly the key story points that Garth wants you to react to -- you focused on the awkwardness (and go back and look at who in particular is most awkward, and think about why you might have been shown that)

Kate Kugler's character is supposed to be more inexperienced with guns, yes. But I know that because I've been following the rest of the coverage. For those who have seen only the trailer, it could erroneously indicate an inexperienced actress.

the unknown WTFedness of the creatures (and again, think about what the trailer tells you about the creatures and what it doesn't)

I think it tells me too much. Visually, at least. Their design in itself is not scary for now, just mysterious. The context is vital to make them scary when seen in action, and it would be extremely difficult to build up that context with a trailer -- so perhaps the creatures should only have been hinted at. The poster kind of does that, with the three main characters small in the bottom and the figures looming over them, but somewhat faded into the background. It's an atmospheric poster, a mood that I think -- with what little I know of the project, of course -- would have suited the trailer as well.

I can get that glimpse only by reading between the lines. What the trailer tries to show me falls flat. None of the things it made me feel have a positive effect on the movie's promotion. Please don't mistake this for a lack of support for the project and Avatar's interest in making films -- it's precisely because I support and am excited about both that I'm making my thoughts on the trailer known. I still badly want to watch this, but I think it's important to point out that the trailer is not one of the reasons behind my interest and why.

Have to say I really enjoyed the trailer. Lots of promise. Will be great to see a longer one with maybe some dialogue. So excited about this. If Stitched does well, maybe someone WILL give Garth a buget that size. I certainly hope so!

Thanks. The next project will have a more ambitious budget for sure.
